RSL Throwback vid of the day! “Schizo Head”, one of my favorites cause of the editing I did and to me it shows schizophrenia perfectly.

Most disgusting

I see people here on Tumblr are talking about the most disgusting thing they ever saw.

I honestly can’t think of the most disgusting thing I have seen but I know what the most disgusting thing I ever smelled was…

For the most part my schizophrenia causes visual hallucinations and light audio ones. I knew that smell ones existed but as far as I knew I had never experienced them. And of all the stuff to hallucinate smells seemed like a walk in the park compared to the monsters i was used to. I had just had ECT treatments a few months before and was house sitting for a friend. I awoke to what felt like a hand soffocating me with the most retched smell in the world. I gasped for air but it consumed my lungs and crawled into my head. I stumbled out of bed and ran to the bathroom throwing up. Slowly the smell lifted. It came back a few more times that week. Ever since then I get them out of the blue. None have ever been as traumatic as that first.

Preconceived Notions

Her: so you have schizophrenia?

Me: Yep.

Her: have you ever killed anybody?

Me: Not yet

odd

Lately I’ve been noticing my speech seems to be deteriorating. I hear it when I talk out loud teaching modeling/acting classes. At first I thought I was just off one day but now every time I teach (4 classes a week) I find myself having to work harder on words. “Runway” and “Runway Room” are the hardest for me to say… and I say those things a lot. It comes out “unayoom” almost every time now.

Another tip off is that everyone keeps commenting on my southern accent. My accent used to only come out on southern words and when I was tired and my mind gets lazy. Now at least once a week someone says something about it… I think my mind is slacking so it’s coming out more.

I don’t know… just a kinda weird thing I’ve been noticing. If anyone has any info on the speech thing let me know.

Hmmm

Just watched a “20/20” about childhood schizo… I feel it was a terrible representation of schizophrenia.

The parents all seemed like enablers and were setting their kids up to fail as later being adults with mental disorders. Instead of helping their children truly learn to deal with having a mental disorder in the real world. I also felt the show was blowing normal childhood occurrences into big issues.

Planning

Great article I just found on MSN about making a crisis plan for schizophrenia:

I’m gonna do one. I have a very small one but nothing like this.

Mental Disorders

This story was recently in the local news:

http://m.charlotteobserver.com/charlotte/db_260234/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=TbCN2OCJ&full=true#display

Basically a mental health facility was going to be built but the people in the town were scared for their children’s safety so the plans were rejected.

Here is the response I have sent the newspapers:

I was shocked and greatly saddened to see the story about Huntersville, NC denying Carolinas Healthcare System’s plans for a new behavioral and mental health facility.
The people interviewed were worried about it’s proximity to schools and parks. Their children’s safety is not what is at risk but blind prejudices toward those with mental disorders. Most of us just recently learned of how for years North Carolina did forced sterilizations on those considered by the government to less competent. Everyone was shocked over what happened years back and now look people still are afraid of those they consider to not be as mentally sound as themselves.
I am myself a diagnosed schizophrenic. I have been living with constant hallucinations, depression, mental confusion, memory gags, and a host of other issues for most of my life. I am also a video producer who’s work has been featured on many TV shows around the world and made appearances on shows such as NBC’s “America’s Got Talent”, MTV’s “What The Flip?”, “Whacked Out Sports”, G4’s “Ninja Warrior” and many others. In addition I graduated Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors) from Charlotte’s own Johnson and Wales University with a Bachelors degree in Sports, Entertainment, Events Management. During my college years I under went electroconvulsive therapy and had to relearn how to read and write while keeping my grades up.
Most people would have no idea I have a mental disorder unless I tell them. And I am quite out spoken about my disorder due to having to face public shame, prejudice, and dealing with my own misplaced guilt for feeling broken. I don’t want others to feel that way, no one should. Having a mental disorder DOES NOT make you stupider, broken, worthless, or dangerous.
I have made numerous videos documenting my disorder but here is a recent Q&A I did on my own schizophrenia, I hope it can help shed some light on the confusion people seem to be having about us:

The sweetest comment anyone has ever posted on one of my videos. I like the “future” part.
